Evaluation of Educate Girls’ Five-Year-Scale-Up in India

To tackle the problem of deficits in school enrolment and improve educational outcomes among girls, Educate Girls (EG), a non-profit organization, helps girls to enroll in government primary and upper primary schools. The program has scaler up from 13000 villages to 35000 villages across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. The organization targets enrollment, retention, improvement in learning outcomes, development of girls with life skills education, school governance, and infrastructure across various girls and schools. This scale-up will include five program components.

  • Existing Villages Program
  • Adolescent Girls Program
  • Primary Organic Program
  • Primary Inorganic Program
  • Technical Partnerships

Sambodhi has been engaged to conduct an impact evaluation of the program and to assess the following:

  • The causal impact of the EG program in Primary Organic and Primary Inorganic villages on student learning,
  • change throughout project implementation, and
  • If necessary, leverage insights from the evaluation and course-correct to deliver targets.

This impact evaluation by Sambodhi will estimate the causal effect of EG’s scale-up on learning outcomes in a representative sample of villages that receive the primary learning program. Data collection will be done in two phases. The verification exercise for enrolment and retention will involve collecting retention data from exam registers in sampled schools.

Verification of life skills programming will be done through focus group discussions with Bal Sabha members in the sample schools and document verification of meetings. Verifying school improvement plan submissions will be carried out by collecting primary data on the status of preparation and submission of school improvement plans.
