Monitoring, Learning, and Evaluation for Development Professionals

About the course

Embark on a transformative learning journey with our Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation (MEL) Self-paced Course for Development Professionals. Designed by seasoned practitioners, this course offers unparalleled conceptual clarity on MEL through real-world examples, providing participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to plan, conduct, and manage effective M&E programs. Delving deep into the Global South context, we dive deep into existing MEL frameworks, fostering critical perspectives on theory and practice. Our course encourages participants to develop cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary viewpoints, enabling them to approach unique problems with innovative solutions. In today's rapidly evolving world, this self-paced course not only equips development professionals with vital skills but also creates a nurturing space for self-directed learning while equipping learners with the means to drive impact and positive change

Introduction to MEL

In this module, you will be introduced to Monitoring and Evaluation(M&E). It involves understanding MEL, the types of evaluations, the history of evaluation, and the MEL landscape from the view of the Global North and Global South.

All about Program Cycles, Theories, and Program Contours

In this module, you will understand program cycles, theories, and define program contours. It will include a detailed explanation of concepts such as programs, projects, program cycles, program theories, the importance of stakeholders and audiences for evaluations, logic models, the logical framework approach, project implementation plan, results framework, theory of change, assumptions, and pre-conditions.

Monitoring for Program and Policy Ecosystems

In this module, you will conceptualize the difference between monitoring and evaluation and understand what it means when we say terms such as monitoring, monitoring process, monitoring frameworks, its types, what to monitor, web-based MIS vs mobile-based MIS, and the theory of systemic change.

Evaluation Questions, Approaches, and Frameworks

This module will broadly cover concepts explaining evaluation, evaluation framework, approaches, designs, methods, evaluation process, types of evaluation, evaluation question (EQ), and their importance.

Valuing the Evaluand: Reflections on M&E Context, Power, and the Role of Value

In this module, you will learn about evaluand and the role of values in evaluation (whose, what, and how to value). Finally, the need for context, culture, intersectionality, equity, and sustainability will also be covered.

Evaluation Designs

In this module, you will learn about research designs and types of evaluation (Impact Evaluation, Experimental Evaluation, Process Evaluation, Randomized Control Trials, etc.)

Sampling

This module will simplify concepts such as sampling, probability and non-probability sampling, its types, sampling and non-sampling error, sampling bias, ways to select a sample for monitoring and evaluation, sample size estimation, and the ways to determine the sample size for the survey.

Learning

Finally, this module will broadly cover the importance of learning and the ways in which monitoring and evaluation findings can be utilized. It will also cover knowledge dissemination with involved stakeholders.
